A major upgrade to the Stuart Highway is now completed to improve the road's flood immunity, safety and efficiency in Alice Springs.
As part of the $10 million project, the road was duplicated and includes intersection upgrades, new rest areas and truck parking bays to cater for increased traffic along the Stuart Highway, Victoria Highway and the Barkly Highway.
Off road cycle and pedestrian paths, improved street lighting, upgrades to the kerb and guttering, undergrounding of drainage systems, landscaping using arid plants and improved access to the information bay have been included.
Works included the construction of two travel lanes in both directions along with dedicated turning lanes at various intersections.
The section between MVR and Herbert Heritage drive has become dual carriageway. This section was prioritised for the numerous direct business driveway access points onto and road intersections with the highway. Heavy vehicle movements onto and off this section of highway have increased and this upgrade will improve safety and increase capacity for future growth.
The Stuart Highway project was the eighth and final project to be delivered under the $19 million National Network Road Safety and Fatigue Management Initiative package of works, which is part of the broader $77 million Northern Territory Roads Package.
